Will Technology Replace A Human Security Guard?

May 10, 2023

With a strong network of CCTV camera and facial recognition technology, the time taken to locate personnel in an airport is just 7 minutes. Consider we downsize the area from airport to a 420000 sq ft site (size of a condominium site) with the same security infrastructure, the time taken to locate the same person is less than 2 minutes.

In term of the capability to monitor a huge field of activity (big-scale events) or identify a person among a crowd, the power of technology exceeds the human’s ability to do so. Think about the next few major events that is emerging – EURO 2021 & Tokyo Olympics, if you are the organizer what is the most appropriate mode for monitoring. To station more security personnel at the various key points might not seem that feasible. I believed that most of us will agreed that tapping on to a comprehensive network of CCTV will be the way to go. The security personnel will now change from ushering to be stationed in the surveillance room which suggest that jobs are not lost but is reformatted. The size of the usher can be reduced with the manpower being better allocated for best monitoring practice.

For the business owners we have always heard them arguing why so much budget is being allocated to a physical security when installation of this technology would work as well. This is a realistic issue that exist, and many owners are dropping their manned guard service in favour of something more streamlined and automated. This will means having more tech-lite personnel in the control room to monitor a larger scale of area.

On top of that a cloud-enabled security platform helps to reduce hardware and storage cost. By saving all the videos or CCTV footage to the cloud server, we are able to free up more space for other use as well as a more systematic way to keep all this videos. Since all the real-time videos are save to cloud, you may also have the access to real-time video feeds on any digital device (mobile phone).

In term of monitoring the human traffic at the major checkpoints, the face recognition technology eliminates access card usage and tap on to biometric traits to gain entry to a particular place. Any tailgate or bypass is not possible as the checkpoint only allows one authorized person to get pass unauthorized entry will trigger the alarm. The only problem or challenges that the security personnel got to be aware of is how to respond to emergency or critical time (electric shutdown or accidents). In a nutshell, it means the ability to adhere to the standard protocols while ensuring the best practice that safeguard the assets.
